WSU Mens Basketball Spanks USC 85-77

The WSU mens basketball team put together a huge team win against USC Thursday night in Pullman. DeAngelo Casto was simply marvelous scoring 24 points, 10 rebounds, for another double-double this season. Klay Thompson and Faisel Aden put in another 20 points each in a great win for the Cougs. The only bad news of the night was when Cougar point guard Reggie Moore when down hard & left the game early due to an ankle injury. Marcus Capers took over “point” and did an outstanding job even under a tough trapping defense by USC. With this win, the Cougars are back on the NCAA bubble going into Saturday’s game with UCLA. This game is huge and the Cougs will have to play without Klay Thompson. Thompson was suspended Friday morning due to “off-court” events. Coach Bone & AD Bill Moos made the right decision to take the suspension now which may mean the Cougars will have Thompson back for the PAC 10 Tournament. The rest of the team will have to pick up their game while at the same time slowing down the pace of the game if they want to beat UCLA. The Cougs are playing at home and have the Zoo Crew backing them up in what should be a really good game.

WSU Mens Basketball: NCAA or NIT Bound?

The WSU men’s basketball (8-8, 18-10) improved their post season tournament chances with a strong win (80-69) over the Huskies in Seattle last weekend. While most consider the NCAA tournament out of the question for the Cougs at this point in the season, the Cougs still have a chance to make the big dance or the NIT based how they play in their final two games of the season.  Huh? How’s that possible say the cougar faithful for a team currently in 6th place in the PAC 10?

Well, the best and most obvious way is for the Cougars to make it to the NCAA big dance is to run-the-table at the Pac 10 tournament. The winner gets an automatic invitation to the NCAA Tournament. Notice, I did not say “easy” and I will leave it to your to ponder the odds of that happening. However, the Cougs can also get into post season play by winning one or two of their final games against the LA schools and getting a little help from Cal and the Huskies.

The Cougars open with USC followed by UCLA in a snowy and cold Pullman this week. While WSU will not be playing basketball outside, snow on the ground always boosts the moral of Coug fans & players who think the LA schools can’t handle the cold NW weather. Whether or not that is true is open to debate but bad weather on the Palouse can play havoc with the logistics of the opposing teams getting Pullman. As most Cougs know, snow can and does delay teams, bus rides, and practices which can impact player preparation. Advantage Cougs- with snow in Pullman!

Besides the snow, here’s how the WSU post season tournament chances look. If the Cougs beat USC on Thursday, WSU will have the better overall record at 19-10 vs USC’s 17-13 and would be tied with SC at 9-8 in the conference play. Cal also plays Stanford this week and the outcome of the that game comes in-to-play for the Cougars.  Cal is currently 9-8 conference and 16-13 overall. If Cal wins, they will have a better conference record at 10-8 than the Cougs. However, the Cougs would have a better overall record and they have a chance to play again which Cal does not. Of course the best situation for the Cougs would be for USC and Cal to lose which would give WSU a better overall record for both conference and non-conference play. This would put WSU back in the post season hunt coming into the UCLA game on Saturday. Should the Cougs go on to beat UCLA, it would give them three quality wins and momenium at the end of the season which are big tournament factors. It would also leave WSU sitting with a pretty 11-8, and 21-10 record going into the PAC 10 tournament.

Now while you are drinking the Koug Aid, we need a little bit of help from our dog friends in Seattle. If the Huskies can beat USC, assuming WSU does as well, this really drops USC out of the picture baring success at the PAC 10 tournament. Cal also drops out of the picture since they only have one game left to play and the Cougs have a chance to win both. Should that occur, WSU would have both the better conference and non-conference record and higher number of quality wins. Additionally, Cal was also just hit with NCAA penalties/sanctions although this will not prohibit them from post season play.

Now while Coug fans would like UW to beat USC, they also need UCLA to beat the dogs on Thursday. UW would then end the season with a 11-7 conference record & 20-19 overall, giving the Cougs a better overall record and a tie in conference wins. In that situation, WSU would likely edge the Huskies based on the recent season “sweep” in Seattle.

The final factor for the Cougs post season hopes will be their success and others in the PAC 10 Tournament. There are a ton of scenarios to work out but the bottom line on WSU’s post tournament hopes is that they need to take care of business by winning at home this week.  If WSU beats either USC or UCLA in regular season play, AND wins one or two games at the PAC 1o tournament, they would likely get an invite to the NIT. Should the Cougs beat both USC and UCLA in Pullman, they once again become a NCAA bubble team with a strong chance at the dance. Win one maybe two games at the PAC 10 tourney, Crimson and Gray will be dancing at the NCAA’s.

WSU Cougars Sweep the Huskies in Seattle

WAAAAAZZZZZU! The WSU Men’s basketball team won big tonight by beating the Huskies, 80 -69, in Seattle. With a second season win and a sweep of UW, the Cougars once again have bragging rights to fly their flag over Seattle.

WSU and UW started off slowly with both teams playing tight in the first 10 minutes of the game.  The Cougs slowly started to pull away with a 11-2 run to close the half at 24-17. In second half of the game, Klay Thompson & the Cougs really lit up the scoreboard. At one point, the Cougars were up by 21 points before the Huskies make a final run at 7 minute mark. After the Huskies closed to within 7 points, the Cougs put the game away on a key turnover and big shot by DeAngelo Casto. Great free-throw shooting by WSU after several fouls allowed the Cougs to extend their lead and easily close out the game 80-69.

WSU Coach Bone deserves credit for putting together a great game plan against UW. The Huskies could not find an answer to the Cougs switching defenses & were left shooting outside shots most of the night. Kay Thompson had another nice game scoring 26 points after a little bit of a slow start. Casto looked fantastic down low adding 20 points,  13 boards, in another “string” of good games. Of course, all this was set up by Reggie Moore, 10 Points, who did another masterful job at point. This was however a great team effort with all the players contributing in this sweet win. Marcus Capers, looked good, playing some great defense on the Huskies & Isaiah Thomas. Brock Motum, added 8 points, and Abe Lodwick, also played big on D in the paint.

Overall, it was a great game for fans to watch and a big confidence building win as the Cougars head down the final season stretch. If the Cougars can play like this in the Pac 10 Tournament, they could make a serious run.  Great Win! Nice Sweep!

WSU Sporting Excellence- Cougar Baseball

Hey Cougs… You want to see a winning sport at WSU? Forget football, forget basketball and look no further than the WSU Baseball team! That’s Right! Coach Donnie Marbut is the best coach in the WSU sports stable and he is back to kick-off the season on Feb 28 after two strait years of post season play at the NCAAs. The Cougs come into the season ranked 31st (College Top-40) and 34th (College Baseball Writers) making their first appearance in the early polls since 1991. The Cougs expect to build on this success and again make a run at the College World Series.

You want to see the next Coug pro player? Well, you better come check out the Co#1 Aceugar baseball team this season. There are 3 to 5 guys in the crimson pinstripes that are legit pro prospects starting with the monster-on-the-mound- Adam Conley! Currently, he is the number 1 ace in the pen but #2 Chad Arnold (last year’s NCAA’s ace) is right there with him. Conley is off to a great start,  striking out 9 batters in a early preseason game against Cal State a couple of weeks ago. Coach Marbut is saying he is a potential first rounder which means you gotta check this guy out.

How good are Cougs this year? Damm Good!! Every Coug should check out at least one game this year if you want to see a winning Coug program. While today’s double header in Pullman was a little chilly for most folks, the Cougs really heated things up by sweeping  Cal State Bakersfield. I am telling you right now, grab the kids, get some tickets, go to a game, get some autographs, because this team is going to be fun to watch & there is some soon-to-be-gone pro-talent here. The Cougs home opener is next Friday against UC Santa Barbara.

One other thing, you want to make a big difference in a winning Coug program that has traditionally little money? Send the WSU baseball program $100 and have every Coug you know do this as well. This is a winning team & the best baseball coach since Bobo Brayton and they can use our support on the way to the NCAA’s. The Cougs open the season at home next Friday against US Santa Barbara and it would be great to see that Bailey-Brayton field filled in Crimson & Gray.

Go Cougs! How ’bout another…. Go Cougs!!!!

Cougs vs. Dogs- Cat Fight in Seattle

The WSU men’s basketball team is coming off one of their worst losses this year. Losing to last place Arizona Wildcats, 79- 70, set a new low for the team. In that game, Klay Thompson played well, scoring 30 points even after a silly benching by Coach Bone for a missing i-pod and being late for the bus. DeAngelo Casto once again had a nice game for WSU putting 14 points on the board. The rest of  the team played poorly with shot after shot clanging off the rim.

The big question for the Cougs is whether they can mentally put the AZ game behind them, stay out of foul trouble, and start hitting free throws with consistently? Coach Bone must also do his part & come up with a better game plan to take advantage of situation/match ups for WSU to play well.

The Huskies will be looking to redeem themselves after losing a tough game to AZ a few days ago. They will also be looking for revenge after the high flying Cougs beat them 87-80 in Pullman earlier this year. The keys to this game will be whether the Huskies step-up their defense and will Coach Bone have his team ready to play. This will of course be the usually Dog & Cat fight with passion running high on both sides.

WSU Mens Basketball Woes

With the lost to last-place Arizona State Saturday, the WSU’s men’s basketball team slipped to 7-8-conference record and 6th place in the conference. The Cougs once promising season is now looking rather bleak.  With NCAA tournament chances out the door unless the Cougs run-the table at the Pac -10 Tournament, this season looks to be more like last years- a season of ups & downs ending in frustration.

It wasn’t suppose to be like this, the team maturity, the additional talent, the coaching experience, all were suppose to make this a season of glory for the Cougs. Players and fans alike were thinking this would be the year for a return to the NCAA tournament, the first, since the Bennett years in Pullman.

What’s gone right for the Cougs? Klay Thompson has been absolutely spectacular this year. He has added to his game by being able to drive to the paint & score while drawing 2 or 3 of the leagues best defenders. Of course, his sweet touch 3-point shooting ability is still there most of the time but unlike last season his mental game has improved to the point where he can carry the team at times when they need it most.

DeAngelo Casto has also significantly improved his game (14.6 points and 6.3 rebounds per game) turning into a “beast” below the basket. Casto had another great game with a double double against AZ State.  The additional of new Cougs Faisal Aden  & Brock Motum has improved the team by giving a real 3 or 4 man scoring option as well.

So where has it gone wrong the Cougs?  Coaching, game situation play, free throw shooting, and poor defense! Oh how, we miss the Tony Bennett teams of consistent  day-in and day-out defense with the ability to shut a team down. Remember how you loved to see the Cougs shooting free throws with Derrick Lowe or Taylor Rochestie on the line? And, oh the Bennett coaching, the game preparation, and the situation play. And, yes I would take the less natural talented Tony Bennett team to the current teams undisciplined and under coached high flyers. Those were underdog Cougs, the kind we fellow Cougs like the most. But don’t get me wrong; we love our current team too. I mean who doesn’t like to see Clay stroke the 3, or Casto pivot and jam 2 down low?  Or how about Reggie Moore when he’s at his best driving and dishing the lane? Throw in high-flying superman Marcus Capers and this team is just plain fun to watch. In fact, this is arguably one of the most talented Cougar teams we have had in Pullman, now if we can just get the coaching talent to go with it. University of Virginia (UVA) are you done with Tony yet?

WSU Cougar 2011 Signing Day- Did they Coug it?

After a last place Pac-10 finish and 1-8, (conference) 2-10 (non-conference) losing football season, many Cougar faithful, including myself, were eagerly awaiting National Letter of Intent Signing Day to see what new talent will arrive on campus. After all, one of the strengths of Head Coach Paul Wulff is his supposed ability to evaluate and recruit football talent according to the steady diet of PR out of the WSU athletic dept. to restless fans looking for improvement.

Interestingly, the 2011 recruiting class is as much due to new “super hero” AD Bill Moos (yes I am a fan) as it is Coach Wulff.  How’s that you say? Well, Moos has stated publically that he met each new recruit & their family at the “Night with Cougar Football” road show. Now, one wonders if that was out of necessity to prop up Coach Wulff after constant questions about his long-term tenure. Nonetheless, it shows the level of commitment & involvement by Moos in this newly recruited class. Now with that level of involvement, we must judge success of the Wulff/Moos 2011 class, in terms of results, once the players hit the field. In other words, Moos owns this class regardless of what happens to Wulff.

So how did the WSU Cougars do in terms of quality new recruits? Did they “Coug it” or will this be the turning point on the way to greater success? The answer to the second questions is “NO” the Wulff/Moos team did not “Coug it” with the 2011 recruits. Yes, there were some losses in key recruits, like Spokane’s 4-star RB Bishop Stankey and Stephen Nembolt to Colorado but the Cougs did a pretty good job bringing in talent where they needed it most.  The O & D Line!!

WSU signed 25 football players last week for its 2011 class. Five of those were JC transfers and 10+ players were offensive lineman. Given that WSU had some of the worst offensive & defensive line stats the past couple of years, plugging the holes on the “line” with depth & talent was critical. As Coach Wulff said on signing day, “this is not a flashy class with more linemen than skill guys”, but the players we recruited will be “critical to winning games in the future”.

So did the Cougs get the talent they were looking for? Yes, the Cougs landed some skill position talent in the signing of Curtis High WR Rahmel Dockery  (5-10, 175 lbs). The Cougs have done well with Curtis High talent and I expect the speedster Dockery to make his name known in short order on the return and receiving teams. Rumor has it the Huskies “passed on him” because of size, however, this is exactly the player the Cougs love so mark this down a Coug gain and a UW loss.

The Cougars also added another talented QB in Cody Clements out of California, however, we won’t likely see him other than as a redshirt in the 2011 season unless there are significant injuries in the current QB stable.  Other skill position talent added to the 2011 class was a last minute recruit in RB Marcus Mason. With the graduation of James Montgomery and another Coug RB transfer, Mason could actually see playing time this year if he comes in prepared to compete.

On the Defensive side of the ball, the Cougar’s signed Oregon’s Top Defensive player of the year, LB Logan Mayes (son of Cougar great Rueben Mayes). He was recruited by many of the Pac-10 schools. But with dad’s ties to the Cougs, most thought he would not go anywhere else and we are certainly glad to have him on board. Another D-player who I am excited to see play is Hawaiian 4-star recruit, Chester Sua, who will play Linebacker for the WSU. He is the kind of player that I expect will receive immediate playing time and could be one of the players who becomes a house hold name in short order to most Cougs.

A couple of other new recruits of interest are 350 lb.  Lineman Wendell Taiese out of Oakland, CA and David Davis, grandson of Green Bay Packers Willie Davis.  They will definitely add much needed bulk to the Cougar front line and add hope that we will see vast improvement in the run game.

Overall, I give the recruiting Wulff/Moos 2011 recruiting class a B grade.  Not sexy as Wulff states, but I love that WSU went after linemen in a big way which should give us the depth & talent on-line where it is needed the most.  If things go the way Wulff & Moos expect, we could be bowling next year. So send in the season ticket renewals now & buy them if you don’t.  It’s now time to get on board for what the coaches say will be a winning season.

Applecup 2010: Cougars Play Well- Wulff Keeps Job

As happens more often than not, the end of the football season comes & for the WSU Cougars and “everything” but yet “nothing” is ridding on their success in the Apple Cup. This year was no exception, with Cougars muddling though another painful losing 1-7 (conference) season. Meanwhile, their arch rival Washington Huskies showed up with their bowl hopes on the Apple Cup line for the first time in many seasons. So with with no bowl games or conference championships to play for, the Coug’s were playing for pride and the possibility of knocking Huskies out of a bowl game. For those who have followed Cougar football, this Apple Cup game day situation could be best summed up as the good old days.

However this year, there was something else to play for and that was Coach Paul Wulff’s job. Now some will say it was never in question, but Athletic Director Bill Moos silence up until game day spoke volumes as to what was really on the line.  So for the 103rd time in history, the Cougars and the Huskies did battle on a cold windy day in Pullman. The outcome, a 35-28 victory for the Huskies in one of the best played games by both teams in many years. Either team could have won the game although game officials some how managed to steal the excitement with a series of last minute game-under-review calls on a last few seconds Coug sideline catch. So while Cougars could not overcome a late Jake Locker 29 yd TD catch to Husky receiver Jerome Kearse, Washington State played one of their best game of the year.

Cougar QB Jeff Tuel threw for 298 yards, 3 touchdowns, and Paul Wulff’s job in and otherwise fairly even stat match up game. The only exception was in the rushing dept., with Husky running back Polk putting up most of the 315 vs 110 yards in the game. With the game wrapped up, there was big new for both teams as the Huskies moved on to a bowl game for the first time in 8 years and Washington State Bill Moos announcing the retention of Paul Wulff as the head football coach for the next year.

So while Coach Wulff keeps his job and his 5-32, 3-year win record (worst ever in the Pac-10) for another year, there is still considerable debate within the Cougar nation as to whether this was the right call. This is especially true with WAZZU game attendance dwindling faster than beer at Pullman frat house party. But Moos was in a tough spot. No budget to bring in real coaching talent & the bigger issue of  having been part of the selection committee to hire Coach Wulff. So he did the only real thing he could do, he threw for the end-zone like QB Tuel, played the game well, and kept Wulff for another year.  Go Cougs!

The State of Cougar Football

OK Cougar fans let’s jump right in to one of the hottest topics in WSU athletics- Cougar Football. So we are halfway through the football season. What’s your take on the rebuilding football rebuilding process? Clearly the Cougs have improved to the point where we are scoring points & the games area not complete blowouts. That said, we are in year 3 of the Paul Wulff program and we are sitting at 1-21 and have lost every game by 13 points or more.

How does this compare to U of W who is in year 2 of rebuilding their program? I remember when U of W fans were upset that WSU let Coach Doba go and U of W kept Coach Willingham one more year before letting him go. Should the Cougar football program be farther along at this point? Coach Steve Sarkisian appears to have turned the UW program around, what about the Cougs? Are we just one win away or is it time to a coaching change. Coach Wulff has certainly recruited better players that the previous coaching staff but is that enough with the losses continuing to mount. At this point, can we expect to even win 2 out of 5 remaining games? If we do, is that success enough to keep Coug fans & the administration happy to see the rebuilding process through another year. Clearly, a win against the Huskies would win the hearts of many Cougs fans and probably give Coach Wulff another year. Let’s hope for the best….Go Cougs
