Washington State Defense Secures Win 31-27 Over Colorado

Three point underdog Washington State brought its defensive swagger to Colorado and shut down 3 critical Colorado drives to allow WSU to beat Colorado 31-27 for its first conference win. The Cougars 3-1 are now off to their best start in the Coach Paul Wulff era.

After a quick WSU early score, Colorado came right back in the first quarter to put up a quick 7, followed by a 3 point feild goal to take a 10-7 lead. Both teams put another 7 point on the board allowing Colorado to close the half with the lead.

WSU’s offense can out flat in the second half and Colorado’s adjustments seemed to shut down the Cougars high flying offense along with some very questionable PAC12 zebra calls. In the meantime, Colorado’s QB Tyler Hansen kicked their offense into gear. Buff running back Rodney Stewart ripped off some big chunks of real estate to close the game with 132 yards and his 15th game of over 100 yards rushing.

While the Cougars did not seem to have an answer for Stewart, Wazzu, WSU came right back for a 10-play, 80-yard drive with  fullback Jared Byers hauling in a 11-yard touchdown pass with 6:27 remaining in the third quarter to cut the Colorado lead back to three at 20-17.  The Cougars led by Sr LB Alex Hoffman-Ellis cranked up the D  and refused to let Colorado spoil their PAC-12 opener by shutting down the next couple of Colorado drives.

Finally late in the came Colorado seemed to take control of the game on an 52 yard run by Stewart putting the Buff’s up 27-17 with roughly 6 min left in the game. The Cougars were not done and senior QB Marshall Lobestall was not going down without a fight.  With helpful face mask call and a key run by Winston, WSU marched down the fidld. Lobestall then hit WR Isiah Barton with a 19 yrd pass with 2:35 left in the game.

Down 27-24, the Cougar Defense once again stopped Colorado and the Cougs took posession of the ball. The Cougs could not move it and got hit with another questionable pass interferance call. The Cougs then turned the ball back over to Colorado. The Buff’s went 3 and out after another strong defensive stand. With 1:51 to go, the Cougs went down field with Lobestall hiting Wilson on a beautiful pass as he ran into the end zone to put the Cougs up 31-27. Colorado got the ball back with 1:15 to go. The Coug D caused a fumble regained the ball to close out the game with Lobestall taking a knee.

WSU prepares for Colorado after bye

The WSU Cougars (2-1) prepare this week for Colorado (1-3) after last weeks bye. The Cougars are hoping to recover after their lost to San Diego St. two weeks ago. The Cougs bring a smoking hot offense to Colorado averaging 539.67 yards per game. WSU’s offense is currently tops in the PAC-12 and 6th in nation, which bodes well for a win. Colorado was week on De last year but the Buff’s have improved their game. Currently Colorado’s D is ranked 26th in the nation; giving up roughly 183.5 yards per game. The Cougs are looking to poke holes in that D with both their high powered ground and passing attack. This game is an important conference game and a test for both teams for PAC-12 season play. WSU’s Klay Thomson Skips Senior Year

WSU announced this afternoon that Klay Thompson will stick with his earlier decision to enter the NBA draft and skip his senior year at Washington State. Thompson was the PAC-10’s leading scorer the past year is expected to be a mid-1st round draft pick by most experts. While at WSU, Thompson became the school’s 3rd best scorer in its history & likely would have broken the all time scoring record had he returned to school.  The past season, Klay led the Cougs to the NIT quarter finals while averaging 21 points per game, 5.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.9 blocks, while shooting 39.8 from the 3 point line. Klay will definitely be missed by the cougar faithful & we wish him the best of luck.

WSU Cougars Spring Scrimmage in Spokane

The WSU Cougar Football team closedWSU M. Wilson (WR) out its spring practices with a Crimson vs Gray scrimmage in Spokane’s Joe Albi stadium. On a partly sunny day, the Crimson (1st team) looked good beating the Gray (2nd team) 35-3. Coug Running Back Mitz looked good running for 100+ yards. QB Tuel & WR Wilson looked good at well. Hard to get a read on the Defense because the teams were very out-matched. Of course that is the area where the Cougs need the most improvement if they are to win more games in the 2011 season.

Great to see former QB’s Ryan Leaf and Jason Gesser walking the sidelines along with a number of other former players like Marcus Trufant, Erick Coleman & Alex teams. Attendance appeared to be between 3K to 5K range with a good number of Cougs enjoying the beer garden. WSU AD Bill Moos effort to bring the Cougs back to the Spokane market certainly generated interest with a full week of events. Our own informal survey of Coug fans at the scrimmage was that a good number traveled from outside the area.  It appeared that only about 1/2 fans were from Spokane area so it will be interesting to see if this translates in to ticket sales. Our guess is the Cougs could have drawn just as many to a scrimmage in Pullman but nice to see them schedule events around the state like Spokane, Seattle, and the Tri-Cities.

No matter the team play, the Cougs were however very successful in controlling the media headlines this week. From that standpoint, the Moos media plan could be judged a success. Hopeful Coug fans, eager to get past the last 3 years of losing seasons, saw some signs of hope that could translate into success. The Cougars 2011 pre-season schedule of “cupcake” division 2 teams like Idaho State should translate to early wins. If the Cougs play as well as they did today against PAC-12 teams, the Cougs should be able to win the necessary 6 season games to take the team “bowling”.
