WSU Plays Big- Upsets USC 10-7 in Defensive Battle

WSU1Washington State arrived in LA to play (25) USC with a ton of confidence after nearly knocking off Aubun the previous week. The un-ranked Cougars played USC in the Coliseum in both team’s conference opener and as the PAC12 featured game of the week.

In a game that most thought would be an offensive shootout, both teams defensive units slugged thoughout the game. WSU’s only TD in game came in the 2nd quarter on a Damante Horton 70-yrd. Cougar kicker and NFL candidate Andrew Furney sealed the game with 3:40 left in the 4th quarter by kicking another clutch field goal to put the WSU up 10-7.

With close loss to Auburn and the win against USC, WSU2the Washington State Cougars put the PAC12 on notice that the Coach Leach era had finally began. WSU players celebrated their first win in the Coliseum in dozens of years but spoke with quiet confidence in post game interviews about how their off-season work was finally paying off. The Cougars schedule gets a bit easier with games against Southern Utah and Idaho up next on their schedule.

WSU Cougars Much Improved In Season Opener Against Auburn

Washington State’s Football team kicked off the season on the road against Auburn. Unlike the past few years, the Cougars were competitive from the start putting the first TD and extra point to lead Auburn 7-0 on its opening drive. In a game that Cougs ultimately lost 31-24, they could have and should have won.

WSU controllScreen Shot 2013-09-07 at 3.59.01 PMed the game and time of possession but turned over the ball on 3 key interceptions which let to the “explosives” as Coach Leach likes to say. These opportunistic big scoring plays put Auburn ahead, when their offense could not, and left WSU chasing the Tigers to no avail. The Cougars played run D pretty well but could not contain Auburn’s speed on the edge. The Cougs will need to find an answer quickly as USC will test them in their next game in LA.
