WSU Cougars Much Improved In Season Opener Against Auburn

Washington State’s Football team kicked off the season on the road against Auburn. Unlike the past few years, the Cougars were competitive from the start putting the first TD and extra point to lead Auburn 7-0 on its opening drive. In a game that Cougs ultimately lost 31-24, they could have and should have won.

WSU controllScreen Shot 2013-09-07 at 3.59.01 PMed the game and time of possession but turned over the ball on 3 key interceptions which let to the “explosives” as Coach Leach likes to say. These opportunistic big scoring plays put Auburn ahead, when their offense could not, and left WSU chasing the Tigers to no avail. The Cougars played run D pretty well but could not contain Auburn’s speed on the edge. The Cougs will need to find an answer quickly as USC will test them in their next game in LA.

WSU Cougars Destroyed in Opening Game 30-6

The WSU Cougars riding high on the shoulders of new Head Coach Mike Leach were destroyed 30-6 by BYU in Provo on Thursday night ESPN’s late game match up. WSU looked good in its opening drive until Tuel was picked off on a bad pass inside the BYU 25 yard line. BYU executed quickly showing WSU its high powered offense by putting a quick 7 points on the board. After that score BYU dominated all aspects of the game showing why they were ranked pre-season as a Top-25 team.

WSU managed to pass for 229 yards with QB Jeff Tuel at the control. However Tuel went 30-45 with 2 picks as Coach Leach stuck with him through-out the game. By the 4th quarter, many of the Cougar faithful were looking to see if Leach might play 2nd team QB Halliday. No such luck as Leach stubbornly refused to change up his QB’s, playbook, and running game. The result was demoralizing loss with BYU breaking WSU’s “will to win”.

The only bright spots of the game were the 2 sacks picked up by the WSU Defense and the two long field goals( 41 and 47 ) put up by Furney. Future NFL prospect WR Marquess Wilson posted only 61 yards after 2 big plays, including a touchdown were called back. In the end, nothing seemed to matter as WSU was out-coached and out-played in its non-conference season opener.

WSU returns home to play the FCS Eastern Eagles in the newly upgraded Martin Stadium. Eastern beat Idaho 20-3 over the weekend so the Cougar’s will have to rebound quickly if they expect to win.
