WSU Cougars Win & Headed to the NIT Final Four In NYC

The WSU Men’s basketball team beat Northwestern University 69-66 in OT in the NIT Quarterfinals Wednesday evening. This was the Cougars 3rd NIT win earning them a trip to Madison Square Garden for the NIT Final Four. The Cougs (#2 seed) will play Wichita State (#4 seed) in a match-up scheduled for Sunday..

The Cougars led most of the way however the Northwester Wildcats hung with them in a very close game. In the final minutes of the game, WAZZU had a 2 point lead until Northwestern slid down low and put in a quick 2 to tie the game. With roughly 4.2 seconds on the clock, WSU had final ball and a chance to to win the game. With .02 seconds left, Abe Lodwick was fouled on a pass to him on the way to the basked. Lodwick had a change to put the game away for WSU but missed both free throws sending the game in OT.

With the game on the line, and the Cougar faithful holding their breath, Klay Thompson took control of the game in overtime. Each team traded several trips down the floor in OT but both came up scoreless due to tight D. Thompson  (17 points) finally hit a key jumper for 2 and then put in two free throws a short time later on a Northwestern foul to win the game.

Immediately, the Cougar Zoo Crew erupted joy & started shouting 1 more year to Jr. Klay Thompson. For seconds Thompson,¬† the PAC-10’s leading scorer and future pro prospect held the crowd at bay.¬† Thompson then held one finger, and the celebration was on. While many thought Klay was giving the signal he would be back for another year, clarification quickly came from the team stating that Klay was signaling one game at a time. But for seconds after the game, Twitter tweets were flying that if true, would instantly change the new PAC-12 for the following year.

The Cougs now head to Madison Square Garden to see if they can beat Wichita State to get themselves to the finals. The winner would play either Alabama or Miami for the NIT National Title.
